What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain vital functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production. It represents about 60-75% of your total daily calorie expenditure.
BMR Calculation Formulas
- Mifflin-St Jeor: Most accurate for most people. Uses weight, height, age, and gender.
- Harris-Benedict (Revised): Classic formula, revised in 1984. Slightly less accurate than Mifflin.
- Katch-McArdle: Best for athletic individuals. Uses lean body mass instead of total weight.
BMR vs TDEE
BMR is your baseline calorie burn at rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) includes BMR plus calories burned through activity. Never eat below your BMR - it's the minimum your body needs to function.
